Do you know how it feels to leave work at lunch time and not come back because of a psychological injury? Face discrimination? Never return to your dream job? Apply for long term-disabilitiy benefits? I tell my story to demonstrate how psychosocial hazards can really affect employees, and how they can be prevented. It has been a long road to recovery, and I want to share what has happened to me, to inspire change.
I share my story as a way to encourage leaders to take steps to improve psychological health and safety in their organization. When reviewing your ROI, you may not see changes, or even seemingly negative results. But true change takes time, and it isn’t always measurable by numbers. We have to truly understand the humanity that exists beyond the costs and savings. My story can help you see the positive changes that you're actually making!
At the age of 27, I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. I was relieved to finally understand why I was experiencing the challenges that come along with the illness. But there were psychological injuries that I experienced that weren't related to my disorder, and it's critical to know that it could have happened to anyone.
I have told my story to hundreds of workshop participants, conference attendees, and co-workers. I have always been told "you are so brave" or "it takes so much courage to talk about that." However, I have no fear in telling my story because I know I might be able to help someone in a similar position.
My struggles come with a story of recovery, and this will inspire you to make changes in your own life, both personally and professionally. You will see that the human experience can enrich the data we use to calculate our ROI on psychological health and safety initiatives. You will see that your efforts are already making much more of a difference than you know.
